Off the back of a smart half-length barrier trial win recently, four-year-old Lonhro mare Vanilla Princess headed to Kembla Grange on Friday, October 17 to contest the Mount Franklin Maiden Plate over 1200m.
Starting the race favourite the blue-blooded mare settled in the lead for jockey Winona Costin and was simply too classy, taking the race by two-and-a-half lengths from Ziggy Willie with a further four-and-a-quarter lengths to the third horse Diggler.
A winner of the Listed Illawarra 2YO Classic as well as a third place in the Group Two Furious Stakes behind Mnemosyne and Media, Snippets mare Permissive is out of the Chief’s Crown mare In Confidence, a half-sister to the Group One Golden Slipper winner and successful sire Danzero.
The first foal out of the four-time Group One-winning Encosta de Lago mare, the Evergreen Rich (Mgrs: A W Bott, P K Siu, M Siu & E Siu)-owned mare is a valuable commodity, especially for when she retires to stud after her racing career.
Evergreen Stud Farm will consign four lots at the 2015 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, all fillies by exciting sires Street Cry, Medaglia d’Oro and Lonhro, as well as a first crop yearling by Sepoy.

Lot 445: Bay, filly Sepoy x Miss Alabama (NZ)

Having broken her maiden impressive almost three weeks prior, four-year-old mare Vanilla Princess headed to Randwick to contest the fifth race of the day, the McGrath Estate Agents over 1200m.
Ridden once again by Winoa Costin, the Gai Waterhouse-trained mare settled behind the leader in the run and like her last start, she was too powerful on the line, taking the race narrowly by a long neck margin to Pretty In Paris with a long neck back to Rahy Storm in third.
Bred and raced by Evergreen Stud, Vanilla Princess is the first foal of the Group One Kelt Capital Stakes (twice), Group One New Zealand Oaks and the Group One Stoney Bridge Stakes-winning Encosta de Lago mare Princess Coup. By Darley’s Champion sire Lonhro, Vanilla Princess has now produced two nice consecutive victories for her connections.
Her second foal, a colt by Redoute’s Choice named Thewizardofoz is currently an unraced three-year-old by produced the goods the day prior to Vanilla Princess’s win, scoring by five lengths in a 1200m Randwick Barrier trial.
Bred and sold by Evergreen Stud Farm, two-year-old Lonhro filly Twirl headed out for her first official barrier trial recently and produced the goods, scoring by a half-length margin over Donelle, with a further three lengths to Candelabra.
Purchased by James Harron Bloodstock, the filly races in the silks of Dr & Mrs Bateman in the Randwick stable of trainer Gai Waterhouse.
Out of the stakes placed Danehill mare Cirque du Soleil, herself a full-sister to Champion Sire Fastnet Rock, Twirl is a half-sister to the Group Two placed Emotional Circus as well as the city-winning Fantastic Light mare Mysterious and the Elusive Quality mare Emancipationist.
Twirl’s grand-dam is the Group Three Blue Diamond Prelude winner and Group One Blue Diamond third-placed Piccadilly Circus whose pedigree also includes the Group Three Newcastle Cameron Handicap winner Raheeb and the stakes performed Donnadane, Heart Strings and Modonna.
Cirque du Soleil produced a full brother to Twirl in mid-August after missing the year prior to High Chaparral.
When contacted after her trial, Harron stated that, “At the sales she just impressed with her sheer quality, and how light on her feet she was, with a beautiful action.
“The sales can be a stressful time for yearlings, but they are a good test to see how they will cope as horses in training. Twirl took the whole experience in her stride, demonstrating a top-class attitude to go with a top-class physical, and that she is out of a full sister to Fastnet Rock was the cherry on the cake.”
“We were hopeful of a good run at the trials, and she confirmed what we thought of her with a good win. Tommy had to get a bit serious with her as she shied away from the big screen, but you could see her pulling away again at the end, and it was a highly promising first effort. It’s a good thing that she’s had that experience under her belt now, it will make sure that she’s a super professional for her first run, and we can’t wait to see how she gets on.”
Eligible for the lucrative Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January, this is a race that the filly could be possibly aimed at.
From the first-crop of Evergreen Stud Farm’s stallion Where’s That Tiger (above), three-year-old filly Tiger Quest recorded her third victory recently in South Africa.
Having only had eight career starts, the filly had five starts as a two-year-old, finishing runner-up on debut before then heading to stakes company and finishing second in the Group Two South African Nursery to Virgo’s Babe, the same filly that defeated her on debut. Winning her next two starts, both at Vaal, the Dominic Zaki-trained filly then was unplaced in the Group One Thekwini Stakes at Greyville.
Resuming in August, not all went to plan with the filly finished down the track before the filly returned to the track almost two months later for a narrow third at Vaal.
Heading to Turffontein on November 2, the talented filly was too good for Jackodore and Summer Adieu.
Purchased from the draft of Milburn Creek Thoroughbreds at the 2011 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, the Evergreen Stud Farm raced Senta Desert recorded a strong win first up on Wednesday, November 13 at Warwick Farm.
Having not started since mid-August, the Gerald Ryan-trained Encosta de Lago gelding was readied for his first-up assignment over 1600m with two barrier trial efforts, including a last start second.
Ridden a treat by Damien Thornton, Senta Desert settled in a mid-field position and as the field came around the home turn he made up ground and took the race by a neck from Henny The First, with a short neck back to the third placed Sensing from the Paul Messara stable.
A previous winner over 2300m when he broke his maiden, Senta Desert is the third foal out of the Desert Prince mare Lady Of The Desert, a winner of the Listed Gibson Carmichael and Listed Anzac Day Stakes.
Herself a daughter of the stakes winner Lady Sovil, Lady Of The Desert is closely related to Group One winners Solveig and Gallic, Group Two winners Caymans and Floria, Group Three winners Greig and Mr Ubiquitous, as well as Listed winners Deferment, Agamemon and Adroitly.
Bred to appreciate a bit of a trip, with his first up effort over 1600m a positive, as Senta Desert progress further into his current campaign fingers crossed he can continue on his winning ways.
Having recently won at Turffontein on November 2, Where’s That Tiger filly Tiger Quest headed to stakes class on Friday night at Turffontein, contesting the Listed Gardenia Handicap over 1000m.
Showing exciting speed in the R150,000 event, the Australian-bred filly jumped to the lead and was never headed, taking the event over the older horses in a classy time of 56.02
Trainer Dominic Zaki, who had been very bullish about Tiger Quest’s prospects in the pre-race analysis, was naturally also over the moon afterwards.
“I was under no pressure and my owners gave me the thumbs up to take things slowly as my horses recovered from the virus. That makes a big difference for any trainer, and makes my job a pleasure. This is a smart filly,” he said.
Tiger Quest was bred by Evergreen Stud Farm in New South Wales, in partnership with Messrs Larry Nestadt and Bernard Kantor.
She is the first stakes winner for Where’s That Tiger a resident of Evergreen Stud Farm, and is out of the unraced Canny Lad mare, Sempervivent.
A winner of 4 races with 3 places from her 9 starts, Tiger Quest took her earnings to R363 575.
From the family of Group One winners Anthem and Yell, Group Two winners Lamasery and Written Tycoon as well as Listed winners Sung and Vocalist, Tiger Quest appears as if she is a filly on the up and while her pedigree sees winners up to 2400m at stakes level, what this speedy this filly shows is indicative that she takes after many of the sprinters in the pedigree.
Purchased from the draft of Evergreen Stud at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $350,000 by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Fastnet Rock x Permissive colt was later sold recently at the Hong Kong International Sale.
Knocked down to Liang Yum Shing Howard for HK$6.7million (A$950,355), it was a significant return on investment from his yearling purchase price.
Permissive has had two foals to race, both winners and the current two-year-old Kinsman, by Street Cry is yet to race and she will be represented in the 2014 Magic Millions yearling Sale by Lot 642, a bay filly by Redoute’s Choice.
With only four yearlings consigned, it was great for Evergreen Stud Farm to be the third leading vendor on yearling sale average price at the 2014 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. With an overall average achieved of $206,875, all the staff at Evergreen Stud Farm should feel very excited about the results achieved for our draft. Taking the quality of quantity approach, Evergreen Stud Farm’s top lot went the way of Western Australian trainer Neville Parnham who secured Lot 380 for $315,000. By Champion Sire Exceed And Excel out of the Octagonal mare Family Breakup, this colt is a half-brother to the Group Three winner Divorces ad the Listed winner Disputes. Gai Waterhouse Racing and James Harron Bloodstock went to $280,000 to purchase Lot 606, our Medaglia d’Oro filly out of the Fantastic Light mare Mysterious Light. Closely related to Fastnet Rock, this filly is bred in the “purple” and we are excited about watching her progress. Complete results: Lot 380: B. C. Exceed And Excel x Family Breakup – $315,000, Neville Parnham Lot 515: Ch. C. Star Witness x Leica Lotto – $82,500, Brett Cavanough Lot 606: Medaglia d’Oro x Mysterious Light – $280,000, Gai Waterhouse/James Harron Bloodstock Lot 642: Redoute’s Choice x Permissive – $150,000, Boomer Bloodstock Pty Ltd
On Boxing Day at Royal Randwick, the Anthony Cummings trained Mary Lou (Fastnet Rock x Miss Alabama) produced an impressive length and three quarter win when racing first up this time in (pictured below).
Recording her second career win, the victory gave a pedigree boost to her half-sister, Lot 445 Sepoy x Miss Alabama who heads to January’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.
From the first yearling crop of Darley’s champion 2yo and 3yo, Sepoy was a winner of four Group 1 races including the elusive Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper double, as well as defeating the older Sprinters in the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Lot 445 is the final of our Magic Millions draft to go through the ring and is the out of a Woodman half-sister to the stakes placed Tchaikovsky. Already the dam of three winners including the pair of stakes performers Territorial Waters and Back Off, this filly comes from a family that includes international stakes winners Northern Premier, Take The Raise, Cloud Harbor and Madame Premier.
A draft of three yearlings were offered by Evergreen Stud Farm at this year’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast, and it was great that all three were secured.
The first of the three to sell was the extremely well-bred Street Cry filly out of Emancipationist (Lot 220), who is herself a daughter of stakes- placed Danehill mare Cirque du Soleil, a full sister to Champion Sire Fastnet Rock.
Purchased by Irish Farm Airlie Stud for $280,000, the filly (pictured above) has a classy pedigree and with and further black-type added to it, will see her as a very valuable broodmare commodity down the track.
The next of our draft went through the ring a day later with Lot 373, a filly by Medaglia D’Oro out of the dual Group 1 winner Lady Jakeo knocked down to Western Australia’s Julie Love for only $155,000.
The final lot from the draft was Lot 445, a filly by first season sire Sepoy, an extremely exciting prospect. Out of the winning Woodman mare Miss Alabama, the filly was knocked down to Darby Racing and Gai Waterhouse Racing for $110,000.
Interesting to see that the Mary Lou, the Fastnet Rock half-sister to this mare managed to finish third in the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes, beaten just over a length a few hours after the Sepoy will went through the ring!
It appears the new connections of the filly purchased themselves a bargain…
Tony Bott’s boutique Evergreen Stud Farm at Heatherbrae has an excellent record of producing the type of racehorse buyers love. The BTC T.J. Smith-Gr.1 winner Sizzling (Snitzel- Admirelle by General Nediym), who has earnings of $1.3m, was sold off the farm and other graduates include Gr.1 placed, Listed winner Run for Naara (More Than Ready-Kristopher Street (USA) by Kris S), Gr.2 winner Happy Galaxy (Nadeem-Seven Stars by King’s Best (USA)) as well as several Listed winners in the past few.
Evergreen Stud’s yearling manager, Andrew Russell, believes the core reason for these successes is the climate on the farm. “The beauty of this property is that it is basically drought proof, which allows us to feed consistently all year around. This results in consistent growth on our young horses, which of course means they have good solid bones, resulting in long term soundness,” Russell said. “The other key factor is that we have dedicated, experienced staff and because we provide the whole range of bloodstock services, our staff can follow a horse on our property from birth through yearling preparation, breaking in, pre-training and racing agistment.
Then when a client’s horse retires to stud, we continue the cycle with the knowledge and understanding of the horse’s specific needs.”
In 2015, Evergreen Stud presents a small draft of four yearlings, but each has huge credentials with plenty for buyers to get excited about. First cab off the rank is Lot 23 and this filly represents a cross that works as she is by Lonhro from the Danehill mare Legal Consent. There’s residual value here too as this yearling is a half-sister to West Australia Derby-Gr.1 and WA Oaks-Gr.3 winner Dreamaway (More than Ready) and stakes winner New Spice (Old Spice), a winner of nine races and almost $500,000, as well as two other winners. Second dam Fancy Miss (NZ) (Sir Tristram) was a Listed winner.
Who left dual Gr.1 winner Miss Margaret (Marscay) herself the dam of two stakes winners. “This filly is a forward type who throws to the Danehill mould with that typical Danehill swagger as she walks,” Russell said.
Much has been written about proven sire and triple Gr.1 winner Medaglia d’Oro (USA) (El Prado-Cappucino Bay by Bailjumper) and the consensus is that he appears to the eye to be bigger than he is, with a racing style that made the most of his long stride and high head carriage. Lot 73 is a colt Russell describes as “in the same mould as the sire, a classical type of yearling with great scope and good bone, very handsome.”
This colt is from Mysterious Light (Fantastic Light (USA)), a city-winning mare from the family of Champion Sire Fastnet Rock. Now Medaglia d’Oro’s first Australian runners are kicking goals, this colt, who certainly has a stallion’s pedigree, is well worth an inspection. The mare’s first foal, Mali Rose, also by the sire, had one start last season as a juvenile in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes-LR for sixth, and now three, has recently trialled well for Gai Waterhouse.
The last two colts for Evergreen’s 2015 Easter draft, in ring order, are both by Champion Sire Fastnet Rock, who needs no introduction to readers, but let’s quickly recap. A dual Gr.1-winning three year-old sprinter, Fastnet Rock went to stud with much fanfare, and has definitely lived up to the hype. His first crop was in 2006, and he has 74 individual stakes winners, headed by 18 Gr.1 winners and a Champion Sire title in 2011-12. Fastnet Rock, who commands the highest fee of any sire in Australia, heads this season’s premiership with 13 individual stakes winners already on the board at the half-way point for 2014-15.
Lot 113 is a colt “by a champion out of a champion”. This combination isn’t seen very often, and this colt’s dam is four-time Gr.1 winner Princess Coup (Encosta de Lago), who was crowned NZ Champion Three Year-Old in 2006-07. Her first foal is Vanilla Princess, a city winner this season by Lonhro, and her second foal, by Redoute’s Choice, Thewizardofoz, has just been transferred to Hong Kong where he will join the stable of John Size. Princess Coup has a strong family too, with her first two dams, Stoneyfell Road and Arch Duchess, being stakes winners and stakes producers. “This colt is typical of the Fastnet Rock type, very athletic with a great attitude to life. A good moving sort of individual,” Russell said.
The other Fastnet Rock colt is equally well credentialed. Lot 310 is the son of Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe (USA)) who was exported to the US after running fifth to the aforementioned Princess Coup in the NZ Oaks-Gr.1 and excelled in American conditions winning another six races including the Del Mar John C. Mabee Handicap-Gr.1 as well as a Gr.2 and two Listed events. Her dam is the NZ Oaks-Gr.1 placed Sneech (Grosvenor) and it is a very strong family whose members include Gr.1 winners Roman Emperor (Montjeu), Glorious Days (Hussonet) and Tully Thunder (Thunder Gulch).
Black Mamba’s first foal is Ringhals, a three year-old Street Cry filly now owned by Darley, and her two year-old by Redoute’s Choice, Blackmarker, has trialled well recently for Gai Waterhouse. Russell says of this yearling colt, “He is a well grown, very athletic style of horse who will suit most buyers. He has good bone and is very easy on the eye.”
Although this is only a small draft of four yearlings, Russell is enthusiastically optimistic about the sale. “This is by far the best quality draft of yearlings we’ve ever taken to Easter. Three of the four have direct Gr.1 connections, and the other holds a stallion-making pedigree, so I’d say we have ticked all the boxes. It is very hard to stand out at Easter, but we definitely have lots of ammunition this year.”
Marquee Stud acted as agent for Evergreen Stud’s four Inglis Classic Yearling Sale – Summer Book entries this year and sold three of our four.
Victorian trainer Ken Keys, the trainer of exciting sprinter Rich Enuff, purchased Lot 106 – the Dream Ahead x Fujisawa filly for $30,000 – pictured above.
From the first Australian-crop of Emirates Parks exciting sprinting son of Oasis Dream in Dream Ahead, the filly is a closely related to Japan’s Group 1 winner Furioso and looks to have great residual value.
Darley’s first season sire Poet’s Voice, a son of Champion stallion Dubawi was the sire of the next yearling we sold. Presented as Lot 215, the Poet’s Voice x Luanda colt was knocked down to Lutom Enterprises Pty Ltd for $15,000.
A handful of lots late the Domesday Day x Marina Belle filly (Lot 232) was passed in, before Lot 434 the Ad Valorem x Summerset Miss colt, on the final day of the sale went to Inglis As agent for $15,000.
With two yearlings sent down to the Inglis premier Yearling Sale as part of the Berkeley Park Stud draft, only Lot 219, the Magic Albert x Iltizaam filly (image above) found a home.
Purchased by respected judge Paul Moroney Bloodstock, the first foal of Exceed And Excel mare Iltizaam, herself a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Sharnee Rose and the stakes placed Zaffaan was the top priced filly sold by her sire at the sale.
Our other yearling, Lot 279, Sepoy x Info Miss colt unfortunately was passed in for $70,000 and if you like any further information on him, please do not hesitate to contact Evergreen Stud Farm on (02) 4987 4745.
After the withdrawal of two of our five lots, the remaining three all sold extremely well, with Lot 113, the Fastnet Rock x Princess Coup colt topping our draft.
The first of our draft to head through the ring was an impressive Lonhro filly out of the Danehill mare Legal Consent, making her a half-sister to the Bob and Sandra Peters’ Group 1 West Australian Derby winner Dreamaway.
Purchased by New Zealand’s Barneswood Farm, the filly (Lot 23) was secured for $340,000, the second highest prices recorded for any of the progeny of Darley’s Group 1 Champion Lonhro.
The second of our three-strong draft went through the ring 50 lots later as Lot 73, and the impressive looking colt is the second foal winning Fantastic Light half-sister to stakes performers Emotional Circus and Twirl, all being out of the Danehill mare Cirque Du Soleil, herself a sister to Coolmore Stud’s Champion Fastnet Rock.
By Darley’s Medaglia d’Oro, the sire of Gai Waterhouse’s unbeaten, Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Vancouver, the colt was purchased by Carmel Size for $350,000.
The final of our draft to sell, was Lot 113, the fourth foal out of the Champion 3YO filly Princess Coup.
By Fastnet Rock, the colt has all the credentials to be an exciting stallion was purchased by Southern Breeding Ventures Pty Ltd for $650,000.
